Great Machines: Shooting Hoops at 80 mph

EA Sports Ultimate Gaming Vehicle (UGV)
When EA Sports decided to
build an outrageous vehicle in which VIPs could play its video games while being
chauffeured around during major sporting events nationwide, it turned to
Infiniti, Alpine Electronics, Los Angeles–based tuner CEC, and Innovative Audio
of Bellevue, Wash., to fulfill that exceptional mandate. Infiniti provided a
preproduction version of its mammoth QX56 SUV, which CEC kitted out with
chrome-plated, 23-inch Antera wheels and an 8-piston Brembo brake kit. (As an
indication of the QX56’s outsize proportions, the 23s do not look nearly as
massive as one might expect.)
Innovative Audio removed the Infiniti’s second-
and third-row seats, replacing them with two chairs that were designed to
accommodate a 340-pound football player or a 6-foot-10-inch basketball player:
There is more than 60 inches of legroom. Passengers have an unobstructed view of
a 37-inch flat-panel LCD screen that is connected to both PlayStation and XBox
systems, an AM/FM/XM radio, a CD changer, and a DVD player. Twenty Alpine
speakers—eight tweeters, eight midranges, and four 10-inch subwoofers—are
dedicated to the rear cabin’s gaming and entertainment experience. It all gives
an entirely new meaning to in-car entertainment, a fantastic way to lose track
of time while shuttling from one place to another. For once, even the most
enthusiastic driver might want to take the backseat. If you would like a system
just like this one—or with some variation of its components—all of the companies
involved in its creation are happy to oblige. (Click image to enlarge)
