Great Machines : Auto Entertainment - Hummer

Christian Gulliksen

June 3, 2003

Think back to the first time you saw a Hummer H2 on the road. Even with the precedent of the mammoth Hummer H1, even with GM’s advertising blitzkrieg, even with an eager level of anticipation, it probably still looked outrageous to you. Nevertheless, many new owners want something a little more personalized, and Los Angeles-based 310 Motoring is more than happy to oblige.

This Hummer H2 benefits from the usual 310 cosmetic touches—exterior modifications including chrome side steps, the tinting of all windows and lights, and the removal of H2 emblems—but the real story of this custom Hummer is its sound system. Commissioned by a singer who wanted to hear every note, its most obvious difference from the standard H2 is in the rear cargo area; no longer occupied by the mammoth spare tire, the space has been redesigned to accommodate 12-inch subwoofers and a clutch of amplifiers (see above). Even if wind noise intrudes as the bricklike truck moves down the road, there is no danger that it will overwhelm the radio.

Having spent a substantial period of time in an H2, I can attest to this monitor’s probable value in parking lot situations; rearward visibility is abysmal and distances are difficult to judge in a standard model. Far from being gimmicky, the monitor will likely help the driver avoid minor scrapes. (Click image to enlarge)

Of course, driving forward is far more fun in the H2, especially with the supercharger that 310 added to the vehicle’s motor. And with its stereophonic upgrades, the suede-lined interior of this urban warrior becomes an even more desirable place in which to spend some quality time.
