Automotive Aftermarket: Spin Doctors

Davin Wheel Co.
Revolution and Speed Wheels
You might not know the name
Davin but—along with diamond-encrusted platinum tchotchkes from designers such
as Jacob the Jeweler—the Rhode Island–based company has helped define the
“bling” aesthetic with its continuous-motion wheels, known colloquially as
spinners. Defined as wheels with outer elements that move independently of the
wheel itself, spinners can make a car appear at rest when going 100 mph—or in
motion when stopped at a red light. First introduced in 2001, Davin Wheel Co.’s
spinners became an overnight hit and a de rigueur aftermarket accessory for
style-conscious owners of Escalades and S500s.
While spinners may be ideal
for rolling up to the club, they may be somewhat over the top for running
errands—something akin to wearing a tuxedo to the supermarket. Davin has devised
a happy compromise. The new Revolution 6.1 is the first wheel incorporated with
both spinning and nonspinning applications. (Click image to enlarge)
“We want to provide the
absolute best of both worlds,” says David Fowlkes Jr., Davin’s president. With a
lock mode that can be activated in 10 minutes without the use of tools, the
wheel’s free-spinning element can be fixed in place for less glamorous
activities. Also new for the Revolution line is a 26-inch wheel (the smallest is
20 inches) and a rose gold finish inspired by its current popularity in the
jewelry and fashion industries. “Davin is very tied into the world of fashion,”
Fowlkes says. “We wanted to bring that excitement to our lines.” Revolution
wheels retail for $2,549 to $3,795 per wheel. (Click image to enlarge)
Davin also offers Speed, a
nonspinning line designed for performance. The three-piece wheel comes in
chrome, graphite, or black, and features aluminum overlays and custom bolt-head
designs. The five- and seven-spoke wheels have diameters of 19 to 22 inches and
sell for $1,449 to $2,295 per wheel.
