A Case for Custom: The Bespoke Tradition Continues at Mulliner

Christian Gulliksen

August 3, 2004

Coachbuilder H.J. Mulliner, which was founded in 1909, had long been linked with Rolls-Royce and Bentley when Crewe acquired the firm in 1961. Mulliner has played a similarly prominent role at Bentley in recent years, and the majority of new Bentleys benefit from the coachbuilder’s ministrations in some way. This can be as simple as interior touches or as elaborate as modifications to the body. When I asked to what extent a customer’s wishes can be met, Bentley told me that customization is limited only by safety issues and the feasibility of a project, an envelope that allows for considerable latitude. And Bentley doesn’t simply tolerate such personalization, it encourages it.

According to Mulliner, there is substantial interest in Arnage limousines, and two are being built at the time we go to press. Both feature DVD entertainment systems, humidors, writing tables, and unique interiors. Another customer has requested the integration of a microwave. If you have seen the revised Arnage, with a face similar to the Continental GT, you will know that the Bentley team is capable of extraordinarily beautiful design and can be counted on to assist in creating a stunning bespoke automobile.
